Copyright is an important concept for ensuring the safeguarding of the ownership of creative expression. It is the legal foundation upon with the photographic industry is built. Deryck van Steenderen is a professional photographer and Member of the Association of Photographers (AOP – UK). He is a sessional lecturer at the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and speaks frequently on the topic of copyright. Deryck is passionate about promoting the financial viability and sustainability of photography as a career in South Africa and focuses on educating photographers in good professional practice and intellectual property basics.
What content will be covered?
The class covers the basics of South African intellectual property law, specifically Copyright, efficient legal paperwork for photographers, Base Usage Rates (BUR) and License for Use.
What will I gain?
At the of the class you should understand the workings of the Copyright Act, it’s relevance to photography and how to use it to your benefit through good paperwork. You should also understand the value of clearly defining a BUR and License for Use of images you are commissioned to produce.
